Introduction:

Video Poker is a fairly recent phenomenon, dating back to the mid 1970’s. Although early slot machines used cards and poker hands as payoff symbols, players had no choice to make; the reels stopped wherever the machine determined they would.

The increasing popularity of Video Poker can be traced to several factors and characteristics it has in common with many of the more popular Casino games.

I think that another big reason for its popularity is the fact that it returns your bet for a pair of Jacks or better. In effect, this makes the player feel like a tie is a win. This is an important psychological factor that makes it seem if the player is winning more than they actually are. Maybe it’s because when you drop a coin into the machine, you consider it a lost coin, and when it reappears, on an even money payoff, you feel like you are a winner. It’s a subtle point, but a powerful one.

The reason why you should be interested in Video Poker is the following - It is the only machine game in the Casino that you can calculate the payback percentage, by looking at the Payoff Table. This assumes that you use the optimal video poker strategy, or Expert Strategy, whilst playing the machine.

Playing Winning Video Poker requires three very important tenets:

  1. You should only play machines that give you the highest payback.
  2. You must know how to use the Expert Strategy to play a particular machine.
  3. You should be aware how these machines reach these payback percentages. That is, you must be aware of whether the payback percentage is reached by awarding a large jackpot or whether it encompasses many smaller paybacks. It’s called the volatility of the machine, and how frequently payoffs are made.

Many machines can actually be played to pay back more than 100% of the money invested. You may ask whether the Casinos won’t lose money on these machines ?

The question has two answers. Yes the Casino will lose money if every player playing the machine used Expert Strategy. Most players don’t use Expert Strategy so the Casino won’t lose. Even if only expert players were attracted to these machines, all wouldn’t be able to play the machine at the same time. The Casinos normally surround these machines with other machines that offer significant lower payoffs. These other machines end up sponsoring these few 100% plus machines. The Casinos know that winners attract more players. By having a few winning machines, players are attracted and end up playing all machines available.

Finding the Best Machine:

When Video Poker was first introduced, few people realized that the payoff tables would play such a large role in determining how much and how frequently the machine made payoffs. Since serious players began to analyze the payoff tables in the early 1980s, it has become apparent that finding the correct machine to play makes all the difference.

There are generally two types of Video Poker machines, no wild card games such as Jacks or better and Bonus Poker, and wild card games such as Jokers Wild and Dueces Wild. Each type of machine requires a different set of Expert Play. The Payoff Tables differ and that is why it’s so important to know what makes a good Payoff Table.

To begin with, let's concentrate on the non-wild card games.

Up

Jacks or Better Poker:

Introduction:

The First rule is never to play a machine that does not return your investment on a high pair of Jacks or better. Machines that require you to make two pairs before returning your bet, is an unacceptable option.

Up

Jacks or Better Payoff Table:

Pay Off table

Let’s examine a Jacks or Better Payoff table. This is usually located above the cards, and it generally gives you the payoff for the number of coins inserted, usually from one to five.

Looking at the Payoff table you’ll see the various poker hands listed. The area you should concentrate on is the payoff for a full house and a flush. The best machines are the ones that pay 9-1 for a full house and 6-1 for a flush. These machines are called 9/6 machines and represent the Holy Grail for Video Poker players. Far more common and unfortunately less profitable are 8/5 machines. These machines pay 8/1 for a full house and 5/1 for a flush. All other machines such as 7/5 and 6/5 machines should be avoided as they offer poor payouts.

The following table shows the payoff tables of various Jacks or Better no wild card machines. The percentages are achieved by using Expert Play. It is important to realize that you must play Maximum Coins on each bet. All machines offer a bonus for a Royal Flush with maximum coins. The added bonus is what gives the player the edge. If you can’t afford to play maximum coins, it’s better to play a lower denomination machine.

Expert Play Payback Percentages:

Expert Play Payback Percentages
Machine 9/6 8/5 6/5
Royal Flush 800 800 1000
Straight Flush 50 50 50
4 of a Kind 25 25 25
Full House 9 8 6
Flush 6 5 5

3 of a Kind 3 3 3
Two pair 2 2 2
Jacks or Better 1 1 1
Payback % 99.5% 97.3% 95.5%

I'll use the 9/6 machines as an example of how these percentages were obtained. The following table shows the probability of a hand and the return that can be expected with Expert Play.

Calculating Return for 9/6 Machine
Machine Payout Probability Return
Royal Flush 800 0.000026 0.01980661
Straight Flush 50 0.000111 0.00546545
4 of a Kind 25 0.002350 0.05906364

Jacks or Better 1 0.213534 0.21458503
Nothing 0 0.546642 0
Total 1.000000 0.99543904

It’s important to realize that variations in the payoffs for all combinations alter the Payback %. It is impossible to publish the Payback % here for all different Jacks or Better games. As a general rule the payoffs on a Full house and a Flush separate the better machines from the rest.

To help you determine the Payback % on other machines, you can use a program that is distributed by Zamzow Software in the USA. It is called Bob Dancer presents Win Poker.

The program is a shareware program and helps you understand Expert Play. The program can be set to suggest the best Expert play for any hand. The full version can be ordered via the Internet. It allows you to set the game to auto-play and simulate thousands of hands; you can also alter the payoff tables to simulate a local machine. By analyzing the simulation you can determine the Payback % of a local machine.

Please note that although I recommend buying the full program, I do not know the author of the software. If you need more information about the software Contact them directly if you have queries about the program.

Another twist in Video Poker paybacks is a progressive jackpot. These incorporate a progressive meter above a carousel of video poker machines, and a portion of each bet is designated to fund the progressive jackpot that is usually hit on a Royal Flush played with the maximum coins.

When a bank of Jacks or better machines offers a progressive Jackpot, you won’t find any 9/6 machines because the top awards account for a large percentage of the overall payback percentage. Don’t be fooled by being attracted to a Big Progressive Jackpot when the payoffs for a Full House and a Flush aren’t at a reasonable level. You won’t get value for money unless you play at an 8/5 machine on a regular Jacks or better machine.

Up

Jacks or Better Basic Strategy:

Once you've identified the good machines and decided to sit down and play, the next step is to use Expert Strategy when playing these machines.

Don't expect to play flawlessly the first time you sit down. There are many different types of Video Poker machines and each machine requires a different strategy. You should stick to one type of machine until you’ve mastered its specific expert strategies. Once again, Jacks or better is the most basic choice. And by mastering its Expert Strategy, you’ll have a better chance at the more complicated strategies of other Video Poker machines.

The most important concept to grasp at the beginning is the need to eliminate costly mistakes. Most of the mistakes are made by confusing Video Poker with Poker.

Eliminate the following mistakes

  1. Kicker

Don't hold a kicker. A kicker is an unpaired high card that you would hold along with a lower pair. For example, if you have the hand above. Don't hold the pair of 4s along with the Jack. In normal Poker a kicker is held to bluff the other players. You can't bluff a machine. Holding a kicker reduces the chance to improve the pair, which is more valuable.

  2. Inside straight

Don't draw to an inside straight. For example, if you have the hand above, If you discard the 9, you have a 13/1 chance of filling the straight. These are bad odds and will destroy your Expert Strategy.

  3. Both sides open

Draw to a straight if both sides are open. For example, if you have the hand above, If you discard the King you now have a 6.5/1 chance of drawing a straight.

  4. 3 card flush

Don't hold 3 cards hoping to draw a flush. The odds of drawing 2 cards after discarding to complete a flush like above are prohibitive, and will destroy your Expert Strategy.

  5. 3 card straight

The same holds true for a straight. Don’t hold looking to draw cards above to fill in the straight. The odds are you won't.

  6. 3 card straight flush

An exception is drawing to 3 consecutive suited cards. For example if you have the hand above, Holding the 6,7 and 8 of diamonds is close enough to a straight flush to make it a decent risk to a high payoff.

  7. 2 card connecter

Don't play two card connectors. A hand like the one above is virtually worthless, but many players are captivated with the suited quality, and would hold the 2 and 3 of diamonds. The chances of drawing a straight flush or even a straight are too remote to make it a viable option.

  40. 4 to an inside straight, 2 high cards (0.4680)
  41. King only, with suited 10 penalty card (0.4645)
  42. Ace only, with suited 10 penalty card (0.4640)
  43. Suited 10 and Ace (0.46056)
  44. 3 unsuited high cards, ace highest (0.4561)
  45. 3 to a straight flush, spread 5, 0 high cards (0.4431)
  46. 4 to an inside straight, 1 high card (0.4043)
  47. Garbage, discard everything (0.3597)
  48. 4 to an inside straight, 0 high cards (0.3404)

Rare exceptions:

Terms:

Outside straight: An open ended straight that can be filled at either end, such as (7,8,9 and 10)

Inside straight: A straight with a missing inside card, such as (6,8,9 and 10)

Penalty card: Sometimes one must discard a potentially useful card. For example if you had a suited 10, Jack and Queen and an unsuited Ace, the Ace needs to be discarded even though it can increase your chances for a Straight. As an Ace is discarded there are only 3 more chances to draw an Ace for a possible Royal Flush, making it less likely. A suited low card in the hand above would also represent a Penalty card as discarding it makes a flush less likely.

High Pair or High card: A pair of Jacks or better, or a Jack or better

3 to a Straight Flush, Spread 4: 3 suited cards with 2 being consecutive cards, such as (suited 4,5,7)

3 to a Straight Flush, Spread 5: 3 suited cards within 5 cards, with none being consecutive, such as (suited 3,5,7)

To use Expert Strategy look up all reasonable ways to play a hand. Select the play that is highest on the list. The number in brackets represents the average return. The numbers can vary according to discards. The numbers shown are for typical cases.

Example: If you have the following hand:

Example

Should you keep the 10 and Ace hoping for a Flush, Straight Flush or a Royal Flush; or should you keep the Ace and Queen hoping for a High Pair? Looking at the table you will see that keeping the Suited 10 and Ace and discarding the penalty Queen and 5 and 9 gives an expected return of 0.46056. Keeping the Ace and Queen and discarding the rest gives an expected return of 0.4743. The best play is keeping the unsuited Ace and Queen.

The easiest way to learn the Expert Strategy is to practice it at home. Use the shareware version of Bob Dancer presents Video poker. You can set it to auto suggest the best play or to warn you if you don’t make the expert play. Make sure that you are comfortable with the Expert Strategy above before you try it at the Casino. Mistakes will destroy your edge. It’s also better to know the basic Expert Strategy of Jacks or Better, before trying the more advanced machines Like Deuces Wild or Joker’s Wild.

Unfortunately, different types of Video Poker require different Expert Strategies. Although the table above works well for all types of Jacks or better machines, different payoff tables can influence the expected return and thus the Expert strategy. Once again it’s impossible to print the Expert Strategy for all possible machines. Fortunately Zamzow software comes to the rescue. They have a software program that will work out the Expert Strategy for most types of Video Poker. It allows you to choose the type of Video Poker game and to enter the Payoff table for your local machine. It calculates the Best Expert strategy for the particular game. The program was written by Tomski and is called Video Poker Strategy Master. They have not published a shareware version of the program. Contact Zamzow software for more information about the program. It’s a great tool to work out the Expert Strategy for different machines.

Double your Money:

Most video machines have an option that allows you to risk your winnings on a hand for a chance at doubling your money. You can consider taking a chance if the odds are 50/50. Some machines will ask you to guess what color the next card will be; Red or Black? This represents an even money chance and it is worth risking if your original bet was pushed (High Pair). Any other win (two pairs or better) should not be risked. Before you double know that doubling will significantly influence your Payback %.

Other options for doubling include guessing the suit of the next card or finding a card higher than the upcard. Both represent odds of 4/1 for a 2/1 return, which is clearly unacceptable. Even if it pays 4/1 the risk involved is still too high.

Joker's Wild Poker:

Introduction:

It's only one card, but what a difference it makes! With 53 cards in the deck, the different possibilities for winning hands in Joker Poker are very appealing to slot players who enjoy Video Poker. When that Joker appears on the screen, it adds an immediate bonus

The explosion in the popularity of video poker slot machines has understandably led to the development of games that use wild cards. The Joker Poker slot machine is the most popular of these games. It adds a 53rd card to the deck for each hand. Since this gives the player more opportunities to draw winning hands and, indeed, makes the game easier, the payout schedule is lower than ordinary Video Poker.

The Joker will come up about ten percent of the time and the player must be prepared to react to certain situations differently than he would in an ordinary video poker game. Strategy changes in this game and the different situations must be understood to take advantage of the higher payoffs.

Up

Joker's Wild Payoff Table:

Joker Poker Pay table

Though there are many different types of Joker Poker machines-most pay only on two pair, others pay for Jacks-, Kings- or Aces-or-better-and pay tables vary, and the strategies in the accompanying table are applicable to most situations. Some machines pay the highest jackpot for five-of-a-kind. Other machines will reward a Royal Flush without a Joker the top award.

The Joker can be used as a substitute for any other card, or used as a fifth imaginary card of any value (to complete a five-of-a-kind hand, for instance). The machine automatically computes the best hand when using the Joker. The only exception to this rule is that the Joker can’t be used to complete a Royal Flush (Ace, King, Queen, Jack or Ten of the same suit). A Joker completing this hand is paid off as a Straight Flush. In most versions of Joker Poker, the lowest payoff is Two Pair, unlike many Video Poker machines that pay off for Jacks or Better.

Up

Joker's Wild Basic Play:

There are some Basic rules that apply only to Joker Poker. These guidelines are formulated by the unique situations and odds that exist by the addition of the one wild card.

Never draw more than three cards, regardless of the first five cards received. If you get a Joker in the first five cards, always keep one additional card to start with a pair, before the draw. If you don't have a Joker, keep at least two cards of the same suit, so you at least have the beginning of a flush. Drawing a Royal Flush is not possible when you get a Joker in the first five cards, so any flush will be paid off, at best, as a straight flush.

When you start with a Joker, you can't finish with two pair. It's simple. With the Joker, partial straights are better than partial flushes. If you have a Joker-Seven-Eight-Nine any Five, Six, Ten or Jack will pay off. That is 16 possibilities. For a four-card flush with a Joker, you only have ten possibilities to complete that flush. Though the payoff for a straight is slightly less than for a flush, you will draw a straight more times than a flush.

Winning at Joker Poker is no more difficult than an ordinary Video Poker machine. Joker Poker is, however, much more complicated and you must understand what the addition of the wild card does to the probabilities. This very challenge makes Joker Poker more exciting.

Up

Joker's Wild Best Machines:

Calculating the Payback % for a Joker’s Wild Machine is unfortunately not as simple as it is with a no Joker machine.

The easiest way to calculate the edge of a particular machine is to use the registered version of Bob Dancer presents Video Poker.

Set the program to Joker's Wild and change the Payoff Table to reflect the Payoff Table of your local machine. Set the machine to auto suggest the best Expert Play. Finally set the machine to auto-play and run a simulation of at least 50000 hands. If the Payback % is more than 100% you have found a good Machine.

Deuces Wild Poker:

Deuces Wild Payoff Table:

Deuces Paytable

Just as in other varieties of Video Poker, it's important to note the Pay Table on Deuces Wild. But it's not as easy as with Jacks-or-better. Casino executives have discovered several different ways to alter the pay tables that will alter the Payback %. The only way to determine the Payback % for a particular machine is to use the registered version of Bob Dancer presents Video Poker to simulate a particular machine.

The following table gives three examples of how minor variations on the payoff table can significantly influence the Payback %.

Deuces Wild Basic Play:

The object of Deuces Wild, obviously, is to obtain the wild cards to get those valuable hands. But what does it mean when you start off the hand with Deuces?

Even in the highest paying version of Deuces Wild-at 100.6 percent-you will receive No Deuce hands 66 percent of the time, which means that 80 percent of your hands will be losers. Another 14 percent will be the minimum three-of-a-kind winner, which is actually just a push. So if you don't get a Deuce before the draw, you will actually win only six percent of the time.

When you get one Deuce in the initial hand, happens only 30 percent of the time, 45 percent of your hands will be losers, and another 38 percent will get the three-of-a-kind push, leaving only 17 percent that will actually win. Another nine percent will be near-minimum winners as straights and flushes.

Two Deuces in the initial hand-dealt, happens only four percent of the time, means that you must take every advantage of this hand, despite the fact that 70 percent of these hands will wind up being flushes or lower.

About one in four will end up as four-of-a-kind, and one in 98 will wind up as five-of-a-kind.

Some Basic Rules are not to play any machine that does not pay five-for-one for four-of-a-kind. And most important of all, even if you've got a shot at a natural royal flush, do not discard any Deuce.

Up

Deuces Wild Expert Strategy:

The following strategy is a little more complicated that the other two versions covered on this page.

The following rules are important guidelines to use when playing any Deuces Wild Machine. The Best hands are listed first.

  1. Stand with any natural winning hand, except for a natural straight flush starting with 9. Discard the 9 and go for the royal flush.
  2. Draw one card to a straight flush.
  3. Draw one card to a royal flush.
  4. Draw two cards to a royal flush
  5. With two pair, discard one pair and draw three cards
  6. Draw one card to a flush
  7. Draw one card to a straight.
  8. Draw two cards to a straight flush
  9. Draw three cards to a Queen-Jack, Ten-Jack, or Jack-Ten suited
  10. Draw two cards to a suited Six-Seven and a Deuce
  11. Draw one card to a three-card royal and one Deuce
  12. Draw one card to a four-card straight with one Deuce
  13. Stand on any winning hand with one Deuce. Break up a flush, straight or three-of-a-kind for any four-card royal flush, or four-card straight flush
  14. Draw one card to a suited Six-Seven or better with two Deuces
  15. Draw one card to a four-card royal with two Deuces.
  16. Draw one card to four-of-a-kind with two Deuces
  17. Stand on five 10s or better with three Deuces
  18. Stand on royal flush with three Deuces
  19. Stand on five-of-a-kind with four Deuces
  20. All other hands discard everything but Deuces

Video Poker Betting Strategy:

Although Video Poker offers you an opportunity to have an edge on the casino, this doesn’t give you a license to print money. A machine with a Payback % of 100.6% implies that you will over time win 60c for every $100 spent. In the short term you might show higher gains or even losses, but it should even out the more you play.

It’s difficult to predict how much your bankroll should be to overcome a bad run. I normally use a bankroll of $1500 for a $1 machine that requires a maximum bet of 5x$1. Remember it is very important to always play the maximum bet as it almost always offers a bonus for the best hand. This bonus payout significantly influences the Payback %. If you can’t afford to play the maximum bet, it is better to play a lower value machine.

The second important question is how long you should play at one session? Once again have a goal before you start playing. A good goal is 50% of your bankroll. Once I reach a profit of $750 I stop playing.

It’s obvious that you won’t make a fortune playing Video Poker, but it’s a good game and offers value for money. Consider playing it if you are intimidated by the table games. It is a much better option than Slot Machines.
